Nonprofit basics

Specially designed for board members and executives, this training teaches the factors relevant to forming and strengthening a nonprofit organization—everything from filing the right tax forms to establishing a mission statement and defining organizational goals. We’ll cover setting up a board of directors, budgets, articles of incorporation and bylaws, and much more. This is a great overview for those who are new to the world of nonprofit organizations and a timely refresher for those with years of experience.

Board development

We will teach your board and executives about board-building cycles, the legal obligations of a nonprofit board, what is governance, the roles of the board and its members, executive-board relationships, strategies for expanding your board, keeping the board healthy and productive, and more. This seminar is often offered in conjunction with board development and recruiting consulting.

Coalition building

Your organization has strong community ties. Your goals probably affect other groups and possibly the entire community. Your success often depends on knowing when and how to build meaningful coalitions with other nonprofits, elected officials and community groups. We’ll show you how to do this.

Legislation and policy

You may need to affect public policy and laws on a local, state or national level to further your organization’s goals. We will teach you to organize your group legally to accomplish this. We’ll cover the basic political process, how to communicate with and persuade lawmakers, how to effectively communicate your message and position, how to write talking points and white papers, and much more. This training is often a key component of public issues campaign consulting from the Exoro Group.

The media can be critical in drawing attention to your issues. We will teach you how to pitch a story, what the media is looking for and thinking, basic rules when speaking with the news media, how to give an effective interview, how to build relationships with the media, and other skills you will need.

Strategic planning and tune-ups

Our consultants are expert at facilitating the process by which you make short- and long-term plans for your organization. Strategic planning is a big commitment but it is a key to a healthy organization and long-term success. We focus on drawing out the best ideas from your board and key personnel, measuring them against your mission and the needs of your constituency, and breaking them down into concrete, feasible action steps. The result is a detailed road map that defines your organization, identifies progress points, and encourages ownership on the part of the people critical to success.

We also offer “tune-ups”—shorter term, less comprehensive organizational planning that will help you establish goals and plans for achieving your goals in the next year or two.
